Kids Create Term 1, 2016 - 'Discovery'

I am feeling very humbled to be given the opportunity to facilitate Kids Create at Sussex Neighbourhood House in 2016. Kids Create is the brainchild of the ever amazing Amanda Woodford who created and nurtured the group from its inception. Amanda’s generous, creative spirit is a constant source of inspiration and guidance to us and we wish her all the best with her Doctorate and work at The MIECAT Institute.

Farewell 'art party' with Amanda Woodford, December 2015

Day One and our young artists are greeted with a mysterious sign attached to a long length of wool. This first sign says “Start your journey” and as the group follow the length of wool, they are led to various spots around the room, each with its own prompt and corresponding art materials. They then “smudge”, “smear”, “stick” and “scribble” creating a visual record of each experience.

Chatting about the activity, we note down a few descriptive words which then leads us to our chosen theme for Term 1 – ‘DISCOVER/DISCOVERY’.

Discovery 'passports'

Lines, marks and splodges are then added each week to document the creative journey.

New shape and colour combinations are discovered by adding watercolour paint to paper towels…

…and new creations are formed by collaborating with others!

A big thank you to all our young creatives including our wonderful, new helper Ana whose vibrant energy and creative input has been a welcome addition to the group!

Feeling pretty curious and quite a bit pumped about what our next term may bring...

Term 2 for Kids Create, at Sussex Neighbourhood House, begins on the 22nd April.
